Platform builds with Eye Candy (Updated)

  • Henri Beauchamp (Linux) says: "I also posted the experimental versions (release candidate v1.18.6.2 and Windlight v1.18.6.76116) of the Cool SL Viewer on my site: http://sldev.free.fr/ Most of Nicholaz' patches are used, as well as other patches by me and others. Merry Christmas ! :-)"
  • Barney Boomslang (Mac OS X) says: "Ok, th anks to the works of Nicholaz and Alissa and some others, I finally got it to work. Mac version of EC-B downloadable here: (link) The windligh versions in generall give me much lower framerates than the standard versions, so maybe only use it when you really need or want the eye candy."
  • Bit2zero (Windows) says: "I included Alissa's Japanese input improvement in your nice viewer. I introduced it at my personal sites. Let's begin OpenSim (for japanese). Moreover, in order to be able to connect to OpenSim by the Windlght version, -legacylogin patch is included too."
  • Balp (Linux) says: "Back from vacations and my closer to Nicholaz build is made for this. My versions are closer to Nicholaz code that Henry, (one small change to make it build on Ubuntu this time.) Relesed note here: (link) and instructions to work with 18.6.76453, the version from LL with a correct German login language file but not source code."

Thanks Everybody!

I get better framerates with WL on the crippled mac mini i sometimes are forced to use (6fps vs. 2fps), so a mac build of the EC viewer is a godsend...

Henry: It seems that your version on linux causes the first semicolon of typed messages to be deleted.
So if I type ":)" all I get is ")".
I built a 100% Nicholaz viewer which doesn't have that problem.

Hello
I included Alissa's Japanese input improvement in your nice viewer.

I introduced it at my personal sites.
Let's begin OpenSim (for japanese)

Moreover, in order to be able to connect to OpenSim by the Windlght version, -legacylogin patch is included too.

Not on topic but are you aware of this ? http://www.massively.com/2007/12/29/german-second-life-users-at-risk/

Hey Nicholaz, love your client :)
But I can't send postcards with it. The Email field is empty and read only...
I've checked in both BE and EC versions.

Back from vacations and my closer to Nicholaz build is made for this. My versions are closer to Nicholaz code that Henry, (one small change to make it build on Ubuntu this time.)

again off topic: but i think You and others should read NPIRL blog http://npirl.blogspot.com/ and the interview today with Jopsy Pendragon:

" Bettina Tizzy: Is there anything *new* happening with particles?

Jopsy Pendragon: Actually yes... Thanks to Blakar Ogre and Nicholaz Beresford (and several others), a whole slew of particle issues have been tuned up. I'm seriously in awe of their efforts. I've yet to peek at the open source client... I can and will at some point, but there are projects ahead of that. They've actually submitted fixes and patches that have had a phenomenal improvement on particles.

While it's hard to point at any one thing and say "That... there, that's what's better"... I can tell. Density is stronger, transparency is more controllable, speed seems better... and, well, particles can fade into existance now. Before they could only fade away...

Bettina Tizzy: Interesting... these are two modest fellows. You would never know about these activities from their profiles, but that's awesome news.

Jopsy Pendragon: They're deep into the internals of the client... I think that's where they have their fun with SL. Some folks socialize, some create, and some lift the hood to see what makes it run. :)

Bettina Tizzy: Particles and Windlight... your thoughts?

Jopsy Pendragon: Love it. With 'glow,' particles really pop nicely. Fire looks like fire, finally. I still can't get over how great water looks. The most recent Windlight finally fixed the "my face is made out of rough clay" effect that previous Windlight clients had.

There are changes though, which I'm very happy to go back and tune for. As I said earlier, particle density has increased... effects that were ephemeral and wispy are now more like heavy smoke or blinding glare.

Bettina Tizzy: All FIC jokes aside, do you work closely with the Lindens?

Jopsy Pendragon: I love that a certain infamous someone thinks I'm FIC. I do know that a few of the Lindens know me by name and vice versa. I respect what they're trying to do enough to try to use their support system just like anyone else would.

The only exception to that is when people come to me with a discovered exploit. I've yet to find a consistent way to escalate exploit style bugs to Linden Lab privately and effectively... You don't want to just throw them in JIRA for everyone to see.

Nicholaz "The Mad Patcher" Beresford said...

JeanRichard: Yes I was aware of the issue, but it's not a problem at the moment as far as I can tell (a nice possible exploit of some sloppyness of the lindens). Also thanks for the interview snippet, nice to hear that work was noticed.

yazz: about the problem (but it's probably in the regular viewer as well), but I currently can't look at it (not enough time). if it is in the regular viewer too, please make sure to report it on the Linden bug tracker.

I have gone from crashing frequently to very occasionally, thanks to your open source releases.

I would ask, however, that you see if you can make it possible to do conferences IM windows. Currently unable to as it will not allow me to select more than one name at a time no matter the use of CTRL or SHIFT keys.

Keep up the great work.
Misto.

Does anyone know where to get the previous version of Windlight? I was foolish not only to update it but then deleted the old version so now I can't use the Nicholaz version. :(

Those Linden memory leaks are killing me.

Nicholaz "The Mad Patcher" Beresford said...

Phil: If you look at the Linden download link (on their download page), the link contains version numbers and you can modify these in the link to get older versions. Alternately, with the latest linden release, you should be able to just fudge the version number in releasenotes.txt (my version just reads that to determine the version number).

mistoff: Sorry, there's currently no chance doing that ... I'm pretty busy otherwise and keeping a low profile with SL.

Nicholaz.. I dropped you an note inworld but you comment about being busy made me thing you probably didn't get it... would you consider at some point (your next release?) folding in the RestrainedLife modules from Henri Beauchamp? His is Linux only and Marine Kelly's version for windows are just the standard viewer and don't have the Nicholaz touch :)

Balp said...

The new RC works with Nicholaz version, just change the Relesenote file.

Or download the release note from my site.

Nicholaz "The Mad Patcher" Beresford said...

Ilana, sorry, but I have too many patches already. Adding the restraint-life features (btw, they were originallyl developed by Marine) would make things even more complicated for me (and I'm cooking SL pretty much on the backburner at the moment).

Not sure where to leave this, but the EC-a1 version of your viewer causes my video to tear massively in game, the bug is very similar to this one (https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3258)

The difference is that mine won't go away, no matter what I do and it also fills the whole screen.

If you need more information, or screenshots, let me know

Nicholaz "The Mad Patcher" Beresford said...

Ian: Sorry, but I guess you'll have to live with it as I don't have time at the moment to dig into any errors.

Ian said...

Nicholaz: No worries, just wanted to let you know it was there. I don't expect you to jump all over it right away or anything. I know you got a lot of other responsibilities. Windlight is Eye Candy, and not essential. Thanks so much for all the work you have done and will be doing!
