Release: Bleeding Edge BE-w

There were no reports of adverse effects with BE-xw, so I'm calling it a good release. It is based on an old Linden version and you can see the glorious details in the change log. Main point is that it allows building and teleporting to up to 4096m and separates settings from the Eye Candy versions (you may want to copy settings_nicholaz.xml to settings_nicholaz_BE.xml).

Source code is also on the server. If you want to do builds based on BE-w, post them here in the comments and I'll let people know. (Update: Barney's Mac build is already available).

So, here goes the usual blurp:

Disclaimer: This viewer is unofficial and although I am doing my best to make it better than the release viewer, it may contain extra bugs and you will have to trust me that there is no malicious code in it. Please also understand that it runs on the main grid with your real Second Life account and inventory. Also read the disclaimer/header in the Install.txt in my archive.

First make sure you have the expired Linden 1.18.5.3 (download link) installed.

Then download nicholaz-BE-w.zip from my server and while the download runs, have a look at the installation instructions and the change log!

After the download completes, follow the instructions and make sure the files go into the right folder!

If something goes wrong with this version, go to the previous-versions folder. BE-v will still run very nicely and rock solid.

PS: There is an in-world group for announcements of my releases: Search, Groups, "Nicholaz"

Hey Nich, did you know LL lifted the mega-prim server side lockout for Havok 4? Some have said on the official forums that they've been able to build clients from source after removing the client side lockout and it works.

My code has the sizing limits removed (you can increase the numbers up to 100m in edit mode (or you should)).

I saw Able's mail on sldev with a different approach, will see what I can do about it.

You can increase the numbers, but the object snaps back to 10. Even if you go up to 10 and then size up to more than ten - in that case the numbers don't snap back right away - it snaps back as soon as you leave edit mode. I guess either there is an additional server call in there or there is some other place in the code where the size is still limited. libSL can do bigger prims, but the client currently can't, at least up to my knowledge.

I wonder, though, whether tackling this actually makes sense, because as far as I know we don't have official word on whether this is intentional or a bug that will be fixed in the next server release.

(BE-w build running on the notebook, looks fine so far only a pragma warning thing I had to comment out)

Barney: Able posted a patch on sldev that allows creation of arbitrary prim sizes. It's pretty straightforward, I just tried it on the beta grid and it works.

My guess is that it's somewhere between bug and feature. The server does still limit it on the small side (1cm) so I guess the missing limit upper side is somewhat intentional. I'm thinking of adding something like that to the EC version.

They're saying it's a limit in the simulator. That prevents you from changing the size of the prim beyond 10x10x10, but that you can create prims that are beyond that. Just not change their size after the fact.

That would make sense with Able's patch, since prims are created at a mega size with it.

I just tried the Snowblind Edition. Crashed twice after quitting, I were not even logged in, just edited the settings for Cache path etc..

Then when in the debug menu, doing nothing, it just crashed again. Not usable like that. ^^

Ok, just posted the announcement for the mac version of BleedingEdge-W

http://radio-boomslang.shacknet.nu/~bb/archives/2008/05/12/#e2008-05-12T14_45_56.txt

Don't know whether I will continue to do BleedingEdge builds with later patches, though - there are many features missing (for example the whole web media stuff) and to build the 1.18 based clients I need a 10.4 machine available (currrently only my notebook runs 10.4, but it's notorious low on free disc space).

But at least for now it still might be a good idea to keep BleedingEdge alive for a few weeks longer, I guess.

Thanks Barney. No worries about the BE builds, these are pretty good already and should be good for many weeks if not months to come.

Hey, the mac build is not available...

Good job anyway, guys, many thanx :)

Nic, I suggest you add the megaprims patch which is on sldev on your next release. Would be very handy :)

Lilly: The megaprim patch is in EC-f ... it came just a tad too late for BE-w, but will go into the next BE (if and whenever that is released).

Sorry, I forgot to adapt the link to the .zip format I now use for patch installers, so please go to my download page and reload it, the download link for be-w should now work fine:

Btw. if some develeoper in here has nothing to do ... :p ... there is a weird bug in the 1.20.x.x viewers with high-res snapshots and water. Water has some kind of texture border in there... as i when the snapshot is made, first the half side is rendered, water on the right half still animating, and then the right half is rendered... and so you see a hard break line in the water. This is a very annoying bug for photographers.

just fyi
Today (5/16/08) i opened the [BleedingEdge-xw] 1.18.5 viewer and was greeted with a warning that a "Viewer Update" was required. I ignored it and was able to log onto SL®© with no problem.

hmmm... regarding my last comment.
It must of been a LL®© issue, not there now.

I am gonna try this version now. But waht I really would like is somebody looking in the issue that some macs (with nvidia graphics) get kernel panics often.

Computer freezes, and if you wait long enough you see the kernel panic window, if you don't wait, you still neet to restart the mac but do ot know, it was an upcoming kernel panic.

LL does not care much, they say, it is Apple's fault and Apple seems to think, it is LL's fault.

nicholaz! never stop being a luddite and supporting the 'old' viewer (for as long as we can still connect)! i use the 'plain old' nicholaz BE as my main workhorse for building stuff. i dont need pretty sparkly glowing water to build things! (i do need to go over 700m up, so THANK YOU for that one too! woot!)

Nyalee said...

Windlight did no good for me since I can't see glow really, and the pretty atmospheric stuff didn't all the way show, and the water looked grainy.

I run this on a laptop and it runs like a dream, you know, that dream you get imagining how much better the actual viewer was in mid 06 plus all the new sculpties, flexi, and such...

If only rating came back!!

Thanks so much for making this.

Logged on on a laptop for 6 days straight ... =)
