Henri was a busy beaver and has done a version of his CoolViewer based on 1.20, which features the old GUI and many fixes. It is available for Linux and Boy Lane has one compiled for Windows.
Kudos to Henri!

i don't mean to derogate from the nature of this post (way to go henri!!) - just wanted this interesting little post to be known to you, nicholaz: http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2008/06/the-hidden-shad.html
hey there just a small question, i've noticed now when i log into sl my login screen says that i am using an outdated version and need to update in order to connect to the grid... however i can still connect. i have noticed that i am crashing ALOT and i used to never crash at all. this just started today so i'm not sure what is up. the only thing i can see that has been released is the RC
FYI...
EC-f now shows a "version out of date / must download new version" message on the upper right. Seen by at least Emilly Orr and myself, I tested on vista and XP and saw the same thing.
It's weird. EC-f still connects, but it's prompting folks to upgrade to something that can't be downloaded, and release notes point to Dazzle. Ewww.
I hadn't noticed before today since I'm using BE-w as my main workhorse, and have been considering dropping back to OS, heh. :)
Ok, now that damnable message is showing up on BE-w as well. As of this afternoon - it wasn't there this morning, I know that.
I'm afraid they're prepping to block your excellent work from the grid, in preparation for the blinding release. :(
Not only do I see the VIEWER UPDATE REQUIRED message in the Nicholaz Viewer, but it also shows up when using Boy Lane's Cool Viewer 1.19.1.4, release 7.
I'd say just ignore them. Dunno why the Lindens did add them, they know from the "channel" (the tag in the lower right corner) that it's not a Linden viewer and that their *required* update stuff doesn't apply to it. It's merely a nuisance or take it as a badge of honor :-).
Yep, you can safely ignore it. And no worry: this will not prevent you from using alternate viewers in the future. See http://forums.secondlife.com/showpost.php?p=2033005&postcount=167 for the full story.
And even if LL was fool enough to try and block alternate viewers at some point, it would be trivial for us to spoof it and make the servers believe that our viewers are official ones.
LL would find no benefit whatsoever in doing such a stupid thing (although, one might get worried that they already did many stupid things without any benefit in the past... lol !)
After a little bit of delay, didn't we all say RL comes first?, here is the latest Cool Viewer based on the 1.20.12.0 sources and incorporating Marine's RLV 1.11.5
