Next Version?

I've been asked about a Nicholaz 1.20 build, but at the moment RL has me in it's firm grip again and I haven't looked at 1.20 since RC5 which had broken most of my patches.

From what I've heard, two of the major memory leaks are fixed. Even if what the Lindens claim (35 crash reasons fixed) is just half true, their 1.20 could run better and more stable than any Nicholaz viewer ever did.

I'll currently simply wait what happens with their new release and will then see if it will be worth the effort to try another iteration.

I'd love to get a Nicholaz version that works with my Space Navigator and has the old user interface.

Yes, getting my good old friends and groups floater would be really nice, as well as the rest of the UI enhancements Nicholaz' viewer brings.

I hope at least to have to possibility to get a patch that will apply cleanly to the source so I could build it myself :P

It's not just the stability of the Nicholaz that we like, it's the inclusion of things like the seperate friends list and the remap warning.

I now flatly refuse to use a new LL release candidate until there is a Nicholaz version for it.

One problem I have though, is that for some reason, the actual Nicholaz.exe part of every dowload is corrupted when I unpack it. My current get around is to download it to my laptop, unpack it there and then copoy and send the .exe file to my desktop computer.

I'm very much looking forward to the new Nicholaz when you find the time to do it, but RL comes first Nick. The last version still works fine for me, so I can be patient.

Love to see an updated version with the Tools Menu not hidden. They called it an improvement - I call it buffoonery.

It is to bad you have become so disgusted with LL that we suffer. Not that I blame you since LL has a habit of pissing everyone off. The thing is once again their so called enhancements (removing tools menu among others) is yet another functionality removal that is used all the time.

They just don't seem to get it. These people have no friggin idea how to design an easy to use interface and think removing abilitys makes it easier to use. Perhaps it does... for the first 30 minutes while your learning to use the interface.

I certianly hope you find the time to make a new version I don't want to be stuck with the last version for ever since eventually they will violate the no forced upgrade and we will all be forced to use the LL client.

If there has been a memory leak or stack heap, I'd sure like to see it. I'm forced to crash my client every 2-3 hours, and I am set to the lowest possible settings of SL. I would vote in the Nicholaz viewer over any recent viewer, even if I suffer some client FPS loss, the bug fixes and overall look/feel are well worth it. What they've /barely/ managed to scrape together, known as 1.20, is crap, just utter crap. What 1.21-.25 has in store? Few know, next-to-no-one will be happy.

I use the Nicholaz eyecandy Viewer & the RC (because I like to see what's going on but not that far in advance.) Nicholazs' is still far better handling $L.
On the RC, my cpu is running hilt sometimes and the memory error msg is concerning. It's hard to differentiate what is their client and what is their server causing problems lately.
You know we'd love for you to keep up w/ client releases, but understand.
We can hope though!
Thanks for the RL update :)

I have to be included in the in-crowd today, Nicholaz viewers are THE BEST and MOST STABLE viewers I've ever seen.

Perhaps we could make it worth Nicholaz's time and give him say a $5 donation for each viewer he compiles for us :)

I for one would pay that amount, and I'm the one that is still waiting for his disability hearing!

There's at least a few things of your viewers I miss:

* Old friends button
* Viewer footprint in ctl+shft+1
* double-click wear for objects

And yea, I'll echo the comments about the tools menu - every time I log in, it's hidden. If I don't use building options, it's hidden. @#$%^& pain in the arse, is what it is...

sonictvseries said...

Not to mention... The prim size restriction on the LL viewer is a but of a nuisance.

i'll say what nicholaz might say...
henri's/boy lane's coolviewer fixes all the GUI and unhides the tools menu and all that good stuff...i'm just using the CoolViewer for 20.15 while awaiting the "real" patches (nicholaz)

The Linden 1.20 still gobbles up more memory than the Nicholaz 1.19 viewer.

Tillie Ariantho said...

I still log to the Nicholaz BE-w2 version when I am going to do photo shootings at events, because I don't want to crash inbetween.

That wont work with any never version...

Tillie Ariantho said...

Any newer official client I mean. ^^

I would guess that it would take some time to get your patches working again.

And RL is most important...

However, I've installed the LL 1.20 client on my g/f's laptop and it won't even *run*. I've had her running EC-f for a while and it scrapes by -- thanks to your viewer.

I don't know exactly what your patches do, but clearly they are pretty vital for this specific laptop.

Thank you so much for your work thus far! I hope there is more to come, but it's Your viewer and your RL; so be what may. I wanted to express my gratitude for such good work.

Thanks!

ppppplease make a new version. I got 1.20 to run but silly things like the color picker got borked. I'm just tired of these kinds of things.

Balerion said...

Personally, I would love a new Nicholaz client, because LL _still_ has that stupid texture reload bug or whatever it is -- you know, textures reloading randomly for no apparent reason.

Meh.

If the comments here are anything to go by.. i'm in for a real treat; i'm about to install LL's 'official' 1.20.* release of the viewer to see what is going on.
I have been using the 1.19 Nicholaz Eyecandy version since forever, and it seems to be the only one that runs without much issues client-side, although recently I have been experiencing a lot more server-side issues with redmap and inventory (read: database) related problems. all resulting in enormous lag making the whole thing just completely unusable.
I would humbly like to vote for a 1.20 Nicholaz edition.. but your first life comes first. So I will thank you for your efforts up to now and tell you that i'm enjoying the use of 1.19 very much. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Sorry.. just had to report back. you totally can -not- compare 1.20 Official to 1.19 Nicholaz.. the Nicholaz viewer wins hands down. 1.20 on the absolute lowest settings lasts for about 10 minutes before the fps drops below 10 and becomes unusable with all the choppyness. I'm having NONE of that in 1.19 Nicholaz. needless to say I removed 1.20..

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't bother with 1.20, Nicholaz. MONO ships next week, and that requires the new 1.21 client. -- Cheshyr Pontchartrain

Anonymous said...

There's still at least one monster memory leak still. I'm up to almost 900mb of RAM in use by the 1.20 main client after less than a few hours.

*le sigh* Good thing I doubled the RAM in this box...

Anonymous said...

yep...for all the leaks and crashes they fixed, they introduced a whole bag of new ones. it's viewers like 1.20 that pushed me into using your viewers in the first place

Anonymous said...

I second the idea of waiting for the 1.21 version (either RC or main), because I personally don't see any advantage of LL 1.20 over Nicholaz 1.19.

More importantly though, 1.21 brings in a lot of new things that even if it is not an official required update, it will be needed to see and use things correctly (Touch, sculpty mirror/invert, oblong sculpts, etc).

I am definitely looking forward to a Nicholaz 1.21

Anonymous said...

Please, please dear Nicholaz, keep working on the viewer, eve if you skip every other version your viewer is still alot better than the original!
Du bist der Beste!

I wonder how many of the Nicholaz viewer users would be willing to pay, lets say 10 US$, for a Nicholaz viewer? I would for sure. If enough people would then Nicholaz can take this out of his hobby box and put it in his company time :)

Alicia Sautereau said...

i`d kill for an 1.18.5 BE-w MONO version =)

Virtually Barefoot said...

I know I would pay for a Nicholaz update. BUT, I am also guilty (as are most of his users) of never sending even a token donation to him over the years.

Make me pay man! Your work is ALWAYS worth some coin!

Please please don't give up on us!

The new official viewer still eats all the memory until you simply run out of it. With 3GB on board and 9GB pagefile I keep getting out of memory error after 6-7 hours online...

Another voice added to the masses - Nicholaz, your viewers are the best and they SHAME the Linden developers. I am also willing to put my money where my opinion is - because a stable viewer is vital to carrying out business in Second Life - it's as simple as that, and IMO deserves a reward of more value than "great job man!".

1.18.5 with mono or an uncrashable 1.21 :P

in 1 day the RC crashed more often then the entire time since you have released the 1.18.5 patched version!

Cheers!

I 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th waiting for a 1.21 Nicholaz version. I am not giving up my 1.19 Nicholaz for anything. :)

OK, I've tried the released client (1.20.1.5) and 1.21 RC. Crashes and freezes, freezes and crashes.

*tenderly massages her EC-f's shoulders* This one is getting tired, though, Nick. Any chance that RL is getting boring?

I went back from SL viewer 1.20.x to the Nicholaz viewer. And sl runs great again. Can't wait for your new viewer Nicholaz :)

Anonymous said...

i was running Nicholaz EC-f Viever today out of one important Reason. Create MEGAPRIMS!
It works well in the building modus, but leaving it the prims will resize to allowed maximum. Whats guilty, please help.

Lomgren said...

Because that loophole was already closed by the Lindens months ago. It still works on the OpenGrid I believe.

I also have to add my voice to wanting a new Nicholaz version. Hopefully when 1.21 becomes a stable release we'll see it, but I know how Real Life can interfere with Second Life time all too well.

Anonymous said...

Please do not stop creating new versions of your viewer Loser Lab will never produce anything that works as well as yours and I speak from almost 4 years of using their totally head in ass buried viewers Their release candidates while improved as still amateur hour yours is the most stable I have found oh and if it is not too much to ask give us a switch to kill the default hand animations )) totally absurd that a priority 1 animation can over ride a p3 or p4
tired of depending on them for a decent viewer

Princess Ivory said...

For all of you stating recently that you would pay Nicholaz for his work (which he definitely deserves!), or that he should charge for the downloads (ditto on the deserve topic), take a look at his main blog page. There is a yellow "Donate" button we like to call the shoes and beer fund! I bought him at least one drink on his last vacation!

So, every time LL does something boneheaded, and you thank your lucky stars for something like EyeCandy (which I will NEVER part with until there is a new Nicholaz release, for which I am willing to wait until his RL allows for some extra time) get on over to that link, and toss the man some money. It's amazing how fast $10-20 donations can rack up, if we all do it. That said, it's time for me to buy Nicholaz some new running shoes! I'm off to the yellow button!

i think you're talking about typing anims...

Puleeeze give us some indication you hear us.

I want a Nicholaz viewer, I know the quality is there with each build of the SL client it is a crap shoot as to if something that used to work is going to be changed to something patheticaly stupid or just totally borked.

Boy Lane said...

Guys, before you get completely mad and install the official LL viewer ;), there is still the Cool Viewer in 1.19.0.5, 1.20.16.0 and currently 1.21.4.0 available. Including a lot of Nicholaz' patches and the old UI.

Glory Takashi said...

Sorry Boy Lane but your version just crashes before it even loads for me. All your versions have since I first started trying so you are not an option for me.

Boy Lane said...

@glory

This simply means you did not install / extract it properly. Unless Nicholaz you need to replace all the xml's too, without doing this it will crash and always did so :)

Peter Stindberg said...

The recent security hole fixes to the official viewer seem to indicate that ALL old viewers will stop functioning soon.

Please, Nicholaz, give us a recent viewer that does NOT make my harddrive spin like crazy despite the fact that the SL cache is on RAMdisk, that does NOT freeze and crash.

Anonymous said...

Please Nicholaz, a newer BE-w is necessary!

No mono recompilation, and the latest LL viewer that does it wont run on my computer!

There is also that security leak which has me worried if they'll stop allowing other releases~!

I love your viewer but soon SL will be inaccessable to me, which leaves my business, my only income hanging on a limb.
